The Far North Queensland Regional Plan is being reviewed throughout 2023 and 2024.

This region includes the local government areas:

  • Cairns Regional Council
  • Cassowary Coast Regional Council
  • Cook Shire Council (partially – south east corner of Cook Shire including Cooktown and Lakeland)
  • Douglas Shire Council
  • Etheridge Shire Council
  • Mareeba Shire Council
  • Tablelands Regional Council
  • Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council
  • Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council

Reviewing the Far North Queensland Regional Plan will require the ongoing involvement of the local government, industries, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities and the broader community.

That is why the department is undertaking a series of engagement activities and events during the review period including (but not limited to):

  • Regional workshops and pop-up sessions
  • Community online survey
  • One-on-one meetings with key stakeholders
  • Working group meetings with local governments, state agencies, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples, and industry representatives

  • Regional plans set the long-term, strategic land use direction for how a region will grow and respond to change over time. They are an important reference for state government departments, local governments and the private sector when planning infrastructure, regulating land uses and making investment decisions.

    We are reviewing the Far North Queensland Regional Plan. This review covers these local government areas:

    Since the commencement of the existing FNQ Regional Plan in 2009, the region has undergone significant growth and change. This review presents an opportunity to better align the plan with the community's aspirations for the future.

    As part of this process, we are eager to hear from you about your aspirations for the region’s future. Your input will help inform the strategic vision for the region, directing policy goals.

    These aspirations relate to the broader FNQ Region and complement the local planning schemes and visioning initiatives undertaken by your local council.

    Your voice matters and we welcome your input to the vision of the revised Far North Queensland Regional Plan.
