Update on Mount Gravatt Temporary Accommodation Project

Detailed cost estimates have found that in order to make the unused student accommodation at Griffith Mt Gravatt campus available for use by those impacted by the housing crisis, substantial works would be required to bring the facility up to current fire safety standards, especially given its proximity to bush land.

The government consulted QShelter, and the decision has been made instead to invest around $25 million to purchase existing homes directly on the private market, including houses and units, to get vulnerable people housed quicker.

This decision will deliver better value for money. It sees more beds, suitable for longer term accommodation, available sooner and permanently.

Griffith University has publicly indicated it will vacate the Mt Gravatt campus in late 2025 – early 2026 and the Queensland Government will be reviewing other future options for the site.
